Stuart Jenkins thought of himself as an average guy. He was a single, middle aged, high school Speech teacher whose attention was on building a cabin in the Smoky Mountains. He called it The Lodge. When a student from over a decade ago mysteriously appeared on his porch, things stopped being average.

In the following months, as construction continued, a few interesting relationships were also built. A girlfriend, maybe two, a soon-to-be Eagle Scout in need of a role model, and new friends and life discovered in a church coffee shop. But where there is construction, there is often chaos. A girlfriend's deception and a school bully who happens to be a teacher continue the trend of not so average events giving Stuart opportunities to make some extraordinary decisions.

Having an interest in unique construction projects, the premise of building a cabin in the Smokey Mountains pulled me in. And in fact, many specific Smokey Mountain locations play a part, but don’t look for specific woodworking tips. The actual construction in the storyline was that of deepening relationships between unlikely but genuinely good people that were brought together by each one’s investment in a promising young student. This is a fun read, full of clever dialogue, interesting character development and warm (not steamy) romantic interactions. The conclusion is a feel good surprise.

I had read some of Williford's non-fiction books and liked them. I had also heard him speak and knew he was good at that as well, so I was inclined to buy and read this book. I am not a real fiction reader, but found The Lodge to be a gentle, unassuming story that started easily and grew on me. There are a set of unusual circumstances facing the main character, who is an Everyman - if a little more ethical than most. Again, I am not a fiction reader, but burned through this in less than 24 hours.

The author delivers an intriguing and surprising story line . . . intertwined with a little romance. Fun read!

I recently read Steve's new book while on vacation, and looked forward to each chapter. If you've ever read anything by Richard Paul Evans (author of The Christmas Box, which was made into a movie), I think you would enjoy The Lodge because it's full of honesty, Christian values, humor, and, of course...romance! Get yourself a copy this fall, cozy up by the fire with your hot chocolate, and enjoy this fun and touching story. It would also make a great gift!

It has been my pleasure to have known Haywood Smith since we were together in Vietnam. My second tour was as a Tactical Air Controller assigned to Marine Observation Squadron 2 at Marble Mountain airfield near Da Nang.

Colonel Haywood Smith commanded the Marine Air Group (MAG 36) which included helicopters and OV10A Bronco's flown by VMO-2. As you might imagine, the Group CO would not be expected to fly the number of missions Haywood did.

I can assure you going into a "hot LZ" in an assault helicopter like the CH46 was a tough way to make a living.

Since those days, Haywood and I have formed a friendship that I value very much. He has the rare ability to make others feel welcome and valued. He is one of my favorite people whom I admire greatly for his remarkable and outstanding service to our country.

We loved Haywood! Daddy called him a "Can Do Man." Haywood found a way to get it done. I was very fond of him. I still am. Haywood remembers his friends and cares about them, including us, right up until this very day.
